4/15/2025

I am trilled to announce that I will be leading firings alongside friends and colleagues, Scott Rutherford and John Bradford, at Morean Clay Center this coming winter. Our paths all crossed in Taos, NM and we are excited to reunite for this grand firing experience!

There’s a (slight) chill in Florida Air as we welcome in the winter. Kayla Noble, Scott Rutherford, and John Bradford will light a yule like never before, firing all four of the wood kilns on the property.
Kayla will lead in loading and firing the Anagama. This is the largest kiln and will be loaded first. Kayla will bring her expertise in creating large ember beds throughout the kiln to create a crusty, complex surface on the pots close to the floor while the higher shelves receive the classic ash and drippy-ness.
Scott will lead on the new groundhog kiln. This is a wood-soda kiln producing shiny, glazed pots with lots of soda effects.
Last but not least, John will lead the small train kiln and the wood-oil-salt kiln. Both produce wildly unique and experimental effects.
All participants will need to bring cone 10 clay to this event. 20-25 cubic feet of work are recommended. Tall pieces are highly encouraged! Dates and times for visiting artist talks will be emailed out to participants as the symposium approaches.

www.morningceramics.comJoin me for a transformative, two-day coil building workshop at Morning Ceramics Studio in Portland, OR.

About the Artist:
Kayla is known for her captivating approach to pottery, employing a blend of methodical techniques and intuitive exploration to create striking, gravity-defying forms. Her work celebrates the unpredictability of clay, emphasizing the rich dialogue between materials and their transformations during the firing process.

On the first day, participants will engage in an in-depth technique demonstration, learning Kayla’s handbuilding process and how to construct dramatically shaped forms using flat, pinched coils.
The day will include a gesture drawing exercise with charcoal & graphite, allowing students to explore movement and structure while reflecting on the physical sensations of the materials.

The second day focuses on hands-on practice, where participants will work closely with Kayla, receiving technical guidance as they create their objects. This day will also include a dedicated session for insights into their work, helping students explore further nuances in their studio practice.
