When I teach a pottery class my goal is for every student to leave with an increased understanding and appreciation for the ceramic process. I give hands-on, individual instruction specific to each student's needs and skill set. I cover technical skills both on and off the wheel, discuss strategies for finishing forms, and provide insightful views on how a student can develop their work. Our goals are to make considered, well-crafted forms that are both technically accomplished and aesthetically pleasing.
I have taught a variety of skills and ages and always enjoy the atmosphere of a classroom studio. Clay is such a dynamic, exciting material and I relish every opportunity to share my passion. I view working with clay as a holistic practice- that means talking about how objects impact our daily lives as well as demonstrating proper body positioning to ensure an ergonomic workflow.
Join my woodfirings at The Clay Studio of Missoula
For beginners or those ready to dive deeper into their woodfire practice.
Conversation will be centered around developing a deeper relationship to and understanding of woodfire processes. Throughout the firing we will discuss the fuel we use, the materials we construct our work with, and how we may use these to their fullest potential. Technical conversation will also cover processes occurring in the kiln such as combustion and reduction. As a group we will discuss loading strategies, firing methodologies, and shut down practices. During the firing participants will be taught how to listen to the kiln, make intentional choices based on observation, and read an ember bed.
